Founder’s Profile

Junko Hondo PhD

Founder & CEO: MUSE Universal LLC

Drawing upon professional experience and academic training in Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, I have devoted my career to supporting individuals at pivotal moments of transition — those seeking new challenges across diverse stages of life. Through MUSE Universal, I seek to bridge intellectual rigour with a deeply human touch in education and personal growth.

Professional Journey:

My career began in Japan, where I first worked in international trade and later served as a corporate instructor at Fujitsu showrooms. Alongside this, I also worked as an event MC and Japanese language teacher, experiences which nurtured my communication and teaching skills. A move to take part in programme production at the BBC marked the beginning of my international journey, serving as my first step into the global arena.

Since then, I have worked across the UK and the US in education, simultaneous interpretation, translation, and narration. In New York, I also pursued a career as a financial broker on Wall Street, further broadening my professional horizons.

Research and Academic Pursuits

On the cusp of turning forty, I embarked upon graduate study at an Ivy League institution in the United States. During my Master’s degree, I was elected as cohort representative, offering academic support, study guidance, and peer mentoring to the following year’s students in the programme. Following completion, I was appointed Visiting Scholar at the same graduate school, continuing my research.

Subsequently, I pursued doctoral studies at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom—an institution internationally renowned for its excellence in linguistics—where I earned my PhD. Earlier, I had also been admitted to the doctoral programme at King’s College London, enabling me to cultivate my scholarship across leading institutions in both Britain and America.

Over the years, I have taught thousands of students at universities and graduate schools, including the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. My teaching has reached learners across generations and backgrounds - from undergraduates in their twenties to senior executives in their seventies - always guided by the conviction that education holds the power to transform lives.

The Origin of MUSE Universal

A Personal Question:

Japan has become one of the first nations to experience the full realities of an ageing society. Yet I have long questioned whether those who have worked diligently for decades are truly afforded opportunities for meaning and connection in later life.

My Mother’s Story:

This question became deeply personal when I witnessed my mother’s journey. She qualified as a nurse in post-war Japan, at a time when educational opportunities for women were scarce. She served as a nurse until the age of seventy, the last twenty years as Head of Nursing at a distinguished Tokyo hospital.

Yet, upon retirement, it seemed as if she had lost her very sense of purpose. I came to see that this loss was not hers alone, but symptomatic of a wider societal issue: once capable individuals reach the pinnacle of their careers, they are too often severed entirely from social and intellectual life.

Beyond the Individual:

Such a rupture is not merely personal - it represents a profound social loss, particularly in Japan where labour shortages are acute. From this, I began to imagine new spaces where people could remain engaged: continuing to learn, to connect, and to contribute, well beyond retirement.

Reflections on Japan’s Educational Challenges

My work overseas also deepened my concern with Japanese education. Despite the presence of extraordinarily talented young people, opportunities for study are shaped disproportionately by socio-economic background. Even after years of dedicated effort involving the whole family, I have witnessed - myself included - lives and aspirations curtailed by the outcome of a few examinations. Each time, I felt the ache of unfulfilled hopes and became ever more aware of the profound challenges embedded in Japan’s educational system.

At the same time, Japanese universities remain underrepresented in global rankings and are sometimes described by international students as “easy to enter.” Such realities convinced me that something vital must change.

A Founding Vision

Faced with these realities, I came to feel strongly that I wanted to support those seeking to open a new chapter in their lives - to offer them opportunities for self-discovery, growth, courage, and genuine companionship.

This conviction lies at the very heart of MUSE Universal’s founding vision.

Guided by this belief, MUSE Universal was created as a space where education becomes a living journey of curiosity, reflection, and connection — a journey shared by learners from all walks of life.
